What is pico laser treatment?

Pico laser

An advanced medical skin laser with Japanese regulatory approval and US FDA clearance. For concerns including spots, freckles, melasma, pores, acne scars and fine lines.

Extremely short picosecond pulses produce a photoacoustic effect that breaks melanin into finer particles than conventional lasers. This advanced laser precisely targets spots while limiting damage to surrounding skin tissue.

It can also treat difficult-to-treat melasma. By selectively breaking melanin into small particles, treatment aims to reduce the likelihood of pigmentation. Scabbing after treatment is less likely and downtime is usually short.

Expected benefits

  • Spots and freckles
  • Melasma improvement and prevention
  • Tighter pores
  • Improved acne scars
  • Improved skin texture
  • Skin rejuvenation

PicoWay

PicoWay — approved by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

A next-generation laser delivering pulses in picoseconds (one trillionth of a second), much shorter than nanoseconds (one billionth of a second).

The short pulse duration limits stress on the skin and downtime while precisely targeting melanin.

PicoWay is a pico laser with US FDA clearance and Japanese regulatory approval. In Japan, the device is approved for the treatment of superficial and deep pigmented lesions on the body surface. It is used for spots, freckles, melasma and brown birthmarks.

Three modes to adapt treatment to your skin

Less damage to the skin

May also improve melasma

Pico spot — targeted spot treatment

Pico spot treatment takes approximately 10 minutes per area. It can act quickly, and some spots may be removed in one session. It is suited to focused treatment over fewer visits. Picosecond pulses reduce irritation and damage while precisely breaking down melanin in the targeted area.

Pico whitening

This treatment uses 532 nm and 1,064 nm wavelengths to break down melanin in the epidermis and deeper skin. It aims to improve spots, dullness and freckles for brighter-looking skin. Improvement may be noticeable after one treatment, while several sessions are recommended for darker spots, dullness and freckles.

Pico toning — for spots, melasma, dullness and pigmentation

Low-energy laser pulses are applied evenly across the whole face. Treatment is used for widespread spots, freckles and melasma, including lighter pigmentation. The longer wavelength reaches deeper layers of the skin and may also stimulate collagen production.

Pico fractional — for enlarged pores, acne scars, fine lines and spots

The laser is delivered in a pattern of small dots to stimulate collagen production in the dermis. It aims to improve uneven skin texture, including enlarged pores, fine lines and acne scars. Downtime is short. This treatment is an option for people who want to improve their skin texture.

Downtime and side effects of pico laser treatment

There is usually very little downtime. Very rarely, pain, itching, bleeding, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or loss of pigmentation may occur. Protect your skin from UV exposure and moisturise thoroughly. Makeup and face washing are possible on the same day if the treated area is not irritated.

Before and after medical laser treatment

Exercise, bathing and alcohol: Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and soaking in a bath on the day of treatment. Showering is allowed that day. Aftercare: Skin is sensitive after laser treatment. Moisturise and protect it from UV exposure. Follow the clinic’s instructions for any ointment or protective tape. Eligibility: Certain medical conditions, pregnancy or medications may prevent treatment. Makeup: Makeup may be applied immediately after treatment. If protective tape is needed, apply makeup over the tape.
